How to Choose the Best Hand Tied Method For Your Client

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

Hair extensions offer so much versatility, and that’s why we love them so much! Hair extensions can add length, volume and confidence to your client, but you want to make sure you’re using the best method for them. From the way extensions are colored, cut, or installed, it’s important for stylists to know what is best for your client’s hair type.

Hand Tied Methods:

Hand tied extensions are actually a weft type, not a method but the term hand tied is commonly used for a method where a row of beads are attached to the client’s natural hair and then hand tied wefts are sewn to the row of beads. The wefts are hand-sewn which creates a thin, easy to blend, weft. They are flat, flexible, and lay close to the clients’ scalp giving a more natural look without feeling bulky. Additionally, this makes them more comfortable to wear and touch; while giving a full look. Sierra & Sage Hair Extensions offers a thin/fine method, a medium/thick method and a seamless method.

Thin/Fine Method:

Hand-tied Extensions can add volume to thin hair, making the hair look much fuller. If the client has thinner hair, less density around the face, the hair is more see-through or they have a finer texture then the thin/fine method would be perfect for them! The thin/fine method will cause low to no damage to the client’s natural hair. This method gives the hair more support, by having more reinforcement in the foundation. An additional string is added to add support and make the row stronger to help carry the weight of the wefts themselves. The thin/fine method can be used on medium or thick hair as well.

Medium/Thick Method:

The medium/thick method is perfect for stronger hair, with more density or coarser texture. This method will add a lot of volume and blend in perfectly with the client’s natural hair. This method should not be used on thin or fine hair because it can cause too much tension on the natural hair and will likely cause your client to experience premature slipping. Using the medium/thick method on thin hair can also cause more slipping of the beads.

Seamless Method:

The seamless method creates volume and length, while allowing the client to create beautiful up styles without ever seeing beads. The seamless method can be used on all hair types as it has similar reinforcement to the thin/fine method. However, we don’t always recommend the seamless method for our extreme thin/fine clients as you will generally need to use more wefts with this method, which can sometimes be too heavy for those hair types.

Not everyone is a candidate for hair extensions, but by using the correct foundation, our methods allow those with thin hair to increase their length and density. Sierra & Sage Hand tied wefts are sewn by hand, they lay flat to the scalp and are the most seamless/invisible extension option. We offer 20" and 22" length. Each package contains 3 wefts and totals 60 grams. Sierra & Sage hair is double drawn, 100% human, remy hair and is never processed with silicone.
