Healthy hair is such an important topic that has been receiving a lot of attention in the past couple of years- and we are here for it! Taking good care of your hair and keeping it healthy is something we all strive for but sometimes can be hard to figure out what is helping and what is hurting your hair. This is particularly essential when wearing extensions as they require a bit more care. We have created a basic list of some healthy hair trends that are beneficial for anyone and can be a good starting point for those on their healthy hair journey!
Styling
Starting off strong with styling your hair. Heat styling is as popular as ever but can be very damaging to your hair if used too frequently. Heat styling should be used 1-2 times a week at the most to avoid heat damage and keep your hair thriving. Also a heat protectant should always be used on the hair when styling. One great option to avoid constant heat styling is heatless curls. Heatless curls are everywhere right now and are so simple to do. No heat involved and waking up with your hair already styled saves time and your hair. On days that you are not heat styling or using heatless curls, opt for a protective hairstyle like a loose braid or low ponytail/bun to avoid tension on the scalp, especially with extensions.
Maintenance
Maintenance of your hair can be super simple and a huge step in your hair health journey. Starting with regular trims. Regular trims are important for natural hair and your extensions to avoid your split ends from growing upward. Along with this, the use of a hair oil on your mids to ends when needed. For those with extensions, it is crucial to keep your hair extensions hydrated and putting oils from mids to ends before bed is vital to keeping your extensions looking and feeling great. Another way to hydrate your natural hair and extensions is a weekly mask. This super easy step can help nourish your natural hair and protect the longevity of your extensions and you only need it once a week! Lastly, using products that are beneficial to your hair type is so important to not only your hair but also your scalp- the foundation of healthy hair starts at the scalp! Scalp care is equally as important and it is necessary to know how to care for it.
Some basic rules are:
Knowing your hair type. Consulting your stylist about your hair/scalp type is the best way to find the products most beneficial to you.
Regular cleansing, but not over cleansing, to rid scalp from debris and build-up.
Keeping your scalp safe from UV rays - especially as it gets warmer. Use a hair/extension safe mineral sunscreen on your scalp or wear a hat when you are out in the sun.
Home Products
Last but not least, products you have at home that you may not think are affecting your hair but actually are some of the most important. Simple tasks like washing your hair and sleeping still affect the condition of your hair. For example, hard water when washing can put minerals, heavy metals and chlorine in your hair that can cause dryness leading to breakage. It also can affect your skin and cause irritation. Using a shower filter when washing removes these irritants and mineral deposits, which in turn, protects your hair and skin! Another simple switch is using a silk/satin pillowcase or sleep cap. Regular cotton pillowcases do not allow for the glide that a silk pillowcase or sleep cap does when you are sleeping, which can cause breakage and tangling. Silk pillowcases and sleep caps are gentle on the hair and skin. These two simple home product switches can seriously change the health of your hair for the better.
