Balancing your professional and personal life is challenging. As hairstylists, we wear so many hats & with a strong desire to be successful, we often find ourselves feeling overworked, burnt out and unfulfilled. We have all fallen into the thought trap that we will need to sacrifice a particular aspect of our lives to achieve our career goals. Focusing on improving work/life balance will allow you to achieve everything you want and keep you happy all at the same time!
This year for Valentine’s Day, we are encouraging all you hairstylists to be your own Valentine. It is time to dump the stress and anxiety, and find a healthy work life balance. It will allow you to enjoy every moment with plenty of time and energy for work, family, friends, yourself and anything that holds importance to you.
This year, be your own Valentine & use these 5 helpful tips to find a healthy work-life balance!
1. Take More Rejuvenation Days
The best way to create a lifestyle of high productivity and creativity is to completely remove yourself from work-related stress for a day. By taking time for yourself, you will be able to see what is truly important to you now and in the future. You will come back to work refreshed, energized and way more motivated. Taking a day off for yourself is just one simple step to investing in your best self.
2. Schedule Smartly
Scheduling smartly is everything- and we’re not just talking about your clients appointments! As stylists, we have complete control over our time - take advantage of that! Time is the prime factor when trying to improve your work life balance. If you schedule time for yourself like you do your appointments, the balance becomes a whole lot easier. We challenge you to take one hour to yourself a day, this will help you feel more creative, increase your energy and focus. In that hour, do something you love or are passionate about; that’s not work related. This could be reading, working out, learning a new skill or simply just watching your favorite TV show.
3. Learn To Say No
Throughout the day, behind the chair, we have so many requests made of us and because we are in the service industry, we create a habit of saying yes. There is constant pressure to do things even if we don’t want to. Outside of work, we need to have the respect, confidence and courage to live life on our own terms. We should only be saying yes to things that hold importance to us. When you start saying no to unimportant things, you create more time to be present with the things that matter most.
4. Let Go Of Any Fear
Entrepreneurs, business owners, managers and hairstylists worry if they’re not working- they aren’t thriving. As hairstylists, we worry if we don't work constantly, then we are losing pay, clientele, opportunities, etc. But what if you drop the fear and instead believe in yourself. You will carry yourself with so much more confidence and you can officially let go of the fear that there is “always more.” You will be able to feel more joyful, productive and that your accomplishments are good enough.
5. Work hard, play hard
Having a good time outside of the salon is what is going to keep you energized and motivated. Take a moment to think about what gets you excited and the people you love spending quality time with. It’s time to jump into new adventures and relationships outside of the workplace. There is no better time than now to take risks, try new things, learn new skills and maybe start a big project you've been putting off. If getting out of your comfort zone is what it takes to have fun, stop thinking about it & just do it!
In these crazy times, we must take care of ourselves. Creating a balance between how you think, how you work and how you spend your time is essential to your long-term health and mental wellbeing. The desire to create that change only comes from within. So I say you and I and everyone else should take back February 14th as a day to celebrate our most under appreciated admirers of all: OURSELVES and begin to find that much needed life balance.
